—Ange Ushiromiya, Twilight of the Golden Witch

Ange Ushiromiya (右代宮 縁寿, Ushiromiya Enje) is the daughter of Rudolf and Kyrie Ushiromiya and is Battler's younger sister. She serves as the protagonist of Alliance of the Golden Witch and Twilight of the Golden Witch.

During Alliance of the Golden Witch, Ange is instructed not to reveal her true identity to Battler, thus she adopts the name Gretel.

Profile

Background

Ange is the illegitimate child that Rudolf Ushiromiya had with Kyrie, who was his mistress at the time. This caused a schism between Rudolf and his son, Battler Ushiromiya, who promptly left the Ushiromiya family and went to live with his grandparents. Despite this, Battler visited Ange on her birthdays and the two grew close. She was similarly close to her cousin Maria Ushiromiya, the only other person her age at the Ushiromiya family conferences.

In 1986, Ange was sick at the time of the conference and was left home while Rudolf and Kyrie went to Rokkenjima. During this time, Rudolf, Kyrie, and most of the rest of the Ushiromiya family perished in the Rokkenjima massacre. Ange was adopted by her sole surviving relative, Eva Ushiromiya, however Ange blamed Eva for her family's death and the two fostered a mutual hatred.

Ange enrolled in Saint Lucia Academy as a teenager, though she was often bullied due to her parentage. Eva eventually grew ill and died, leaving the Ushiromiya fortune to Ange. Angered at the fact that Eva refused to tell Ange the truth of the massacre and took that truth to the grave, Ange set out to find the truth herself.

Appearance

Ange appears as a teenage girl with auburn hair and blue eyes. She typically wears a white skirt and blouse accompanied by a black double-breasted jacket with flowing sleeves. She also wears a black belt and a purple bow, as well as a red arm-sash emblazoned with the One-Winged Eagle. Ange always wears pink beads in her hair, which she received from Battler Ushiromiya after he won them from a crane game in an amusement park.

The six-year old version of her seen in Twilight of the Golden Witch wears a green dress with white accents and a purple bow around the collar. She has the One-Winged Eagle emblazoned on her left stocking. She also wears a golden key around her neck, given to her by BATTLER at the beginning of Twilight.

As ANGE-Beatrice, she wears an elaborate blue and gold dress decorated accented with black and emblazoned with the One-Winged Eagle. She wears a hat with a funeral veil, which contains a pin also emblazoned with the One-Winged Eagle.

Personality

Ange is singularly dedicated to learning the truth of the Rokkenjima massacre and her family's demise. She holds a lifelong hatred for Eva Ushiromiya, the sole survivor of the massacre. She believes that Eva was responsible as Eva refuses to tell her what had occurred.

Plot

End of the Golden Witch

Ange is briefly mentioned as having attended the 1985 family conference during an extended flashback.

Requiem of the Golden Witch

Ange appears during the Tea Party alongside Lion Ushiromiya. The two are forced to watch a version of events wherein Kyrie and Rudolf Ushiromiya are the culprits, massacring the rest of the family before being killed by Eva. Bernkastel refers to this as the "truth" of what occurred on October 4-6, 1986.

Twilight of the Golden Witch

A six-year-old Ange serves as the protagonist, being told a story designed by BATTLER. She is given a key at the story's beginning; BATTLER claims that she will use the key to make a decision when he has finished telling his tale. Throughout the story, Ange's personality vacillates between her 18-year-old self and her 6-year-old self. In the ????, it is revealed that, after the events of the "magic" ending, she abandoned the name "Ange Ushiromiya" and began writing children's novels as "Yukari Kotobuki" (寿 ゆかり, Kotobuki Yukari). Decades later, she had become wildly successful for her series "Sakutarou's Great Adventure." She was diagnosed with cancer and lost most of her physical strength, however she continued to write. She is invited to a meeting with a fellow author, Tohya Hachijo. She learns that "Tohya Hachijo" is a name used by two authors working together; one is Ikuko Hachijo and the other is Tohya Hachijo, the now middle-aged Battler Ushiromiya. She reconciles with her brother and brings him to the newly-renovated Fukuin House, which she had re-opened as a children's ward. Inside, Battler is greeted by everyone in the Golden Land.

Trivia

  • The red sash worn around Ange's arm is aesthetically similar to the red belt that Kyrie wears around the same arm.
  • Ange's name is derived from the Ragnarok Online Priest skill "Angelus."
  • In the trick ending to Twilight of the Golden Witch, Ange echoes Erika Furudo's catchphrase.
