Maria Ushiromiya (右代宮 真里亞, Ushiromiya Maria) is Rosa Ushiromiya's daughter. Her biological father abandoned her shortly after her birth, leading to a fractured relationship between Maria and Rosa.

Profile

Rosa's daughter.

Her father's identity is unknown. She can't shake off the habit of speaking like a young child, which often earns her a scolding.

She has no interest in studying or making friends, but is very interested in things concerning the occult and black magic. Thanks to her excellent powers of memorization, she knows all kinds of obscure trivia.

Background

Maria grew up in a lonely environment with her mother being at work most of the time and having no knowledge of her father. Many people thought of her as a pitiful and weird child which she does not understand as she does not know why people think of her as pitiful but instead she thinks that she is very happy. Once, Rosa showed her a photo of a tanned man whom Rosa said was Maria's father. However, when Maria request to see it again, her mother yelled and said that the photo does not exist.

One day, a priest visited her school and Maria asked the priest whether it is weird to not have a father. The priest then tells her that is not weird and tells her about the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. This resulted in her believing that she was also the result of a virgin birth due to her sharing a name with the Virgin Maria. This eventually led to her interest in the occult. One day, she met Beatrice while on Rokkenjima and befriended her when Beatrice showed her magic in the form of making candy appear inside an ostensibly empty cup.

In Alliance of the Golden Witch, several flashbacks are seen from the perspective of Maria's diary. Those typically involved instances of Rosa and Maria's relationship. After leaving Maria alone for several days, Rosa returns home with presents, one of which is a set of twenty small ceramic animals. Four of the animals, a group of rabbits, became Maria's favorites and later manifested as the Chiester Sisters.

Appearance

Maria appears as a little girl with short brown hair. She wears a dark corset with a red ribbon over a pink long-sleeve shirt, a black skirt with a pink stripe, knee-high white socks and red shoes. She also wears a small black crown on her head held by a red ribbon tied under her chin. Maria is always seen carrying a pink purse with a large red bow. The One-Winged Eagle is imprinted on the left side of Maria's corset.

Personality

Maria deeply loves her mother, Rosa, and justifies her abusive and neglectful side as not truly being her mother but instead a witch possessing her. She even went as far as defending Rosa's action in her diary and through Sakutarou's thoughts.

She often argues with her cousin Battler, oftentimes over whether or not Beatrice is real.

Maria has a habit of making the sound of "uu", something which Rosa hates. In Alliance of the Golden Witch, Maria's diary reveals that she believes making the sound is a form of magic that will ensure her family is always at peace.

Plot

Requiem of the Golden Witch

Willard H. Wright interrogates Maria regarding the witch Beatrice. Maria happily complies, excited to be speaking with someone who also acknowledges Beatrice's existence. She tells him about her first encounter with Beatrice on Rokkenjima, wherein she showed Maria magic by pulling candy from an empty cup.

Twilight of the Golden Witch

Maria is the thirteenth person to pose a quiz to Ange Ushiromiya during the Halloween party. Her puzzle is a variation of the Wolf-and-Sheep puzzle previously featured in Turn of the Golden Witch.

Trivia

  • On a first-grade test during school, Maria was supposed to write the word for "gun" in Japanese. As Maria already knew katakana, she wrote in the characters for "rifle" rather than the hiragana characters for "gun". She was marked wrong for this answer and, as a result, writes almost exclusively in hiragana.
  • It is also stated by Willard H. Wright that she never lies.
  • In several episodes of the Umineko no Naku Koro ni anime, Maria watches scenes from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
  • Maria's name comes from the name Mary as in the Virgin Mary from Christianity, referencing the fact that Maria believes herself to be a virgin birth since Rosa always told her she never had a father.
