Genji Ronoue (呂ノ上 源次 Ronoue Genji?) is the head butler who manages the Ushiromiya family servants. Genji has served Kinzo longer than any other servant and has earned Kinzo's greatest trust. Due to his closeness to Kinzo, many believe him to be Kinzo's spy.
Profile
Background
Genji, like Kinzo, is the son of a wealthy family. As a Taiwanese native, Genji met Kinzo when the two were living in Taihoku during the Japanese occupation. The two became close friends, and Genji recounts that Kinzo had saved his life during the post-war period; Kinzo had arranged to have Genji and his family smuggled out of Taiwan, however Genji's family was reluctant to part with the wealth they had in the country. Ultimately, Genji was the sole member of his family to escape Taiwan; the rest were presumably killed.
Appearance
Genji appears as an aged and refined man with cropped grey hair and small, black eyes. He wears a butler's uniform consisting of a white shirt and red bowtie under a black suit. His suit jacket is emblazoned with the One-Winged Eagle.
Personality
Genji has a serious personality; Kinzo Ushiromiya describes him as a man who rarely speaks of dreams or "what-if" scenarios. Genji is thoroughly dedicated to Kinzo and speaks highly of him despite his past transgressions, something that Genji ascribes to an "unrepayable debt" that he owes Kinzo (that being when Kinzo saved his life after the end of the Japanese occupation of Taiwan). Genji is willing to go against Kinzo only if he comes to believe that Kinzo is a danger to himself; otherwise, Genji is singularly and wholly devoted to the Ushiromiya family head.
Plot
Requiem of the Golden Witch
Genji appears during the latter half of Requiem of the Golden Witch, during the stage performance of Clair Vaux Bernardus. He is called upon to testify his involvement in the upbringing of Sayo Yasuda.
Twilight of the Golden Witch
Genji is the seventh person to pose a quiz to Ange Ushiromiya during the Halloween party. His puzzle is a trick question centering around the length of a candle.
Trivia
- While not explicitly said to be one in the same, Genji is heavily related to the demon Ronove. Aside from their similarities in name, Ronove and Genji claim in Banquet of the Golden Witch to have known each other for a long time.
- Beatrice refers to the pair as "two sides of the same coin" in Last note of the Golden Witch.
