Tohya Hachijo (八城 十八, Hachijo Tōya) is a mystery novelist who works alongside Ikuko Hachijo. He was originally named Battler Ushiromiya, however he suffered severe memory loss after the Rokkenjima massacre and considers himself to be an entirely different person.
Profile
Background
During the Rokkenjima massacre, Tohya, then known as Battler Ushiromiya, escaped to the submarine base beneath Rokkenjima and eventually left the island on a motorboat. He nearly drowned during this escape attempt, causing a degree of brain damage and memory loss. Upon reaching the Japanese mainland, he was struck by a car and later found by Ikuko Hachijo. Having lost his identity due to the aforementioned memory loss, he was given the name "Tohya" by Ikuko. Over time, the two began working together as mystery novelists.
Eventually, Tohya started recovering some of his memories as Battler Ushiromiya, however he suffered severe pain whenever the memories and personality of "Battler" encroached on his mind. The episodes he suffered as a result of regaining his memory eventually relegated him to a wheelchair.Appearance
Similar to Battler Ushiromiya, Tohya appears as a man with short, spiky, white hair parted to the side. He has brown eyes in his original sprite, however almost every iteration of his character afterwards has blue eyes. Tohya is middle-aged in his only direct appearance in the story, which occurs decades after 1998.
Personality
Tohya is an amnesiac who is somewhat paralyzed by the fear that his original self, Battler Ushiromiya, will one day take over his mind. As a result, he is reluctant to interact with anything from his past life, including refusing to meet with his younger sister, Ange, when she first requested to do so. Tohya is regretful of this fact and spent the decades afterwards attempting to make contact with Ange before eventually learning her new identity as the author "Yukari Kotobuki."
