World War III, also known as the Third World War, was a global war that took place 100 years prior to Ciconia no Naku Koro ni. The events of war nearly led to worldwide destruction and resulted in the rise of factions — national alliances giving smaller countries greater power on the world stage.
Due to a worldwide agreement, World War III was never officially documented and its participants, causes, and resolution have since been lost to time. In order to keep the truth of the war away from human knowledge, researching the war is considered a crime in most nations.
