== Summary ==
In June, 1983, [[Keiichi Maebara]] and his friends, [[Rena Ryuuguu]], [[Mion Sonozaki]], [[Satoko Houjou]], and [[Rika Furude]], enjoy their life in rural [[Hinamizawa]]. Keiichi has a violent dream about attacking Mion and Rena with a baseball bat but ignores it. While Keiichi and Rena are spending time together at the [[dam construction site]], Keiichi meets [[Jirou Tomitake]], a traveling photographer who is visiting Hinamizawa. In response to a joke Keiichi tells, Tomitake offhandedly mentions a gruesome death that had recently took place. Tomitake leaves before Keiichi can inquire about the incident. When Keiichi attempts to ask Rena about it, she coldly claims to have no knowledge of it.
Keiichi asks Mion about the dam construction site and Mion informs him of the Dam War, an extended conflict between the villagers of Hinamizawa and a group of politicians. When Keiichi asks if the conflict led to violence, Mion is quick to deny any such violence took place and abruptly leaves. After meeting up with Rena again, Keiichi finds a news magazine detailing a dismemberment that occurred at the dam construction site some time prior.
