Hotarubi no Tomoru Koro ni (蛍火の灯る頃に, Hotaru no Tomoru Koro ni, lit. When the Fireflies Glow) is an horror manga series written by Ryukishi07 and illustrated by Nokute Koike. The story follows the Tadamura family as the family meets in the remote village of Hirasaka. The story is preceded by a short prologue entitled The First and the Last Gift.

Plot

It's July 2016, and the Tadamura family gathers in the Hirasaka village for the funeral of the grandmother and head of the family: the young man Yukito, his step-sister Yue, his father Masashi, his uncles Nobuteru and Tsunemasa, and his cousins Terumi and Teruya, all come to pay their last respects.

But on that evening, Yue witnesses an incomprehensible scene: the grandmother's dead body starts to move and disappears into the night! The morning after, the family wakes up in a strange world, seemingly cut off from reality, where two suns shine...^[1]

Characters

Yue Tadamura: Masashi's stepdaughter. She is resented by some of the Tadamura family due to her mother's involvement in embezzling family funds.
Yukito Tadamura: Yukito's father. When his second wife's business began to fail, he embezzled money from his mother to save it. As a result, he has a strained relationship with his brothers.
Yumeko Yadamura: Masashi's second wife and Yue's mother. She owned a failing business and allowed Masashi to embezzle money from his mother in order to save it. Once they had used all of the money, Yumeko disappeared.
Granny Tadamura: The matriarch of the Tadamura family. Five years prior to the story, she won 100 million yen in the lottery and decided to leave the money to her three sons upon her death.
Nobuteru Tadamura: Masashi's brother. He is somewhat resentful of both Masashi and Yue due to Masashi's embezzlement and Yumeko's disappearance.
Miyoko Takano: An occult researcher who visits Hirasaka just before the events of Hotarubi no Tomoru Koro ni.
