Hinamizawa (雛見沢) is a fictional village in Japan based off of Shirakawa, Gifu. Hinamizawa serves as the primary location in which Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place. Established several centuries past as Onigafuchi, the rural village was renamed as Hinamizawa in the Meiji era. The only remnant of its original name is the Onigafuchi swamp. Hinamizawa features its own schooling system and a local baseball team: The Hinamizawa Fighters. Many residents of Hinamizawa believe in the village god Oyashiro, an ancient deity believed to be guarding the village. Oyashiro is tied to the village's annual cotton-drifting festival and the tragedies that occur on the night of that festival are often attributed to Oyashiro.
