Hinamizawa (雛見沢) is a fictional village in Japan based off of Shirakawa, Gifu. Hinamizawa serves as the primary location in which Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place. Many residents of Hinamizawa believe in the village god Oyashiro-sama, an ancient deity believed to be guarding the village. Oyashiro-sama is tied to the village's annual cotton-drifting festival and the tragedies that occur on the night of that festival are attributed to Oyashiro-sama.

Trivia

  • Mamoru Akasaka remarks that Hinamizawa could've been a UNESCO heritage site like "that place in Gifu", likely a reference to Shirakawa, the village which Hinamizawa is based off of.
