Many residents of Hinamizawa believe in the village god [[Oyashiro-sama]], an ancient deity believed to be guarding the village. Oyashiro-sama is tied to the village's annual [[Watanagashi Festival|cotton-drifting festival]] and the tragedies that occur on the night of that festival are attributed to Oyashiro-sama.
