Hinamizawa serves as the primary location in which {{higurashi}} takes place. Established several centuries past as '''Onigafuchi''', the rural village was renamed as Hinamizawa in the Meiji era. The only remnant of its original name is the [[Onigafuchi swamp]]. Hinamizawa features its own schooling system and a local baseball team: The Hinamizawa Fighters. Many residents of Hinamizawa believe in the village god [[Oyashiro-sama]], an ancient deity believed to be guarding the village. Oyashiro-sama is tied to the village's annual [[Watanagashi Festival|cotton-drifting festival]] and the tragedies that occur on the night of that festival are often attributed to Oyashiro-sama.
