After recovering from the incident, Sayo was taken under the wing of the [[Fukuin House]] and was given the name "Shannon". After studying at the Fukuin House, Shannon went on to become a servant of the Ushiromiya family. In 1980, Shannon fell in love with [[Battler Ushiromiya]] and the two made a [[Battler's sin|promise to marry each other when they were older]]. However, later that year Battler abandoned the Ushiromiya family and didn't return to Rokkenjima until 1986. As a result, Shannon and Battler didn't see each other after making their promise for six years. Unfortunately, Battler had forgotten their promise by the time he arrived on the island.
