== Plot ==
The story was initially marketed as a remake of {{higurashi}}. On one hot summer day in 1983, a transfer student named Maebara [[Keiichi Maebara]] comes to a peaceful rural village in Hinamizawa. There, he befriends his classmates Rena, Mion, Rika, and Satoko. Accepted as a full-fledged member of the "[[The club|club]]," Keiichi and the gang plays all sorts of activities ranging from card and board games to hide-and-seek. But just as Keiichi was beginning to be assimilated in simple rural life, he stumbles upon the dark history of Hinamizawa. As Keiichi dives deeper into the mystery, he finds that his new found friends may not be all what they claim to be.

:Rena is a girl in the same grade level as Keiichi and the main female protagonist of the question arcs. She is distinguished by her obsession with things she perceives as adorable, calling them {{Nihongo|''kāii''|かぁいい||a slurred form of {{Nihongo|''kawaii''|かわいい}}, meaning "cute"}}, which are usually [[Wikipedia:moe (slang)|moekko]] characters or items she finds while scouring the local dump.

She is next in line to be the head of the Sonozaki household, one of the Three Families which holds tremendous influence in Hinamizawa.

She has been the head of the Furude house since her parents died, but rarely attends town meetings due to her young age. Having previously overcome the traumas of June 1983, Rika is once again forced into a loop of fragments alongside Hanyuu.

:Kuraudo Ooishi is a veteran police investigator at Okinomiya who has vowed to solve the mystery of the Hinamizawa murders before his retirement, to avenge the first victim who he was friends with. Due to his uncouth tactics and the lengths that he goes to in order to solve the mystery, he is looked upon as a nuisance by the villagers, especially the Sonozaki family.

:Jirou Tomitake is a freelance photographer who occasionally visits Hinamizawa. Despite being only an occasional visitor, he seems to know a fair amount about the darker elements of Hinamizawa's past.
 
Eventually, the story was revealed to be a sequel rather than a remake. [[Rika Furude]], the hidden protagonist of the original story, is forced back into the cyclical June of 1983, despite her success in {{matsuribayashi}}. Rika endeavors to discover why she is being tormented again and learns the dark truth about what occurred after she previously escaped the endless loops of Hinamizawa.

Keiichi enters the kitchen and finds Rena clawing at her neck. Rena attacks him with a knife and Keiichi defends himself with a clock.

On June 18, 1983, Keiichi assists the villagers of Hinamizawa with preparations for the Watanagashi Festival. While there, Keiichi, Shion, and Mion meet Jirou Tomitake and Miyo Takano. Ooishi briefly joins the conversation and Shion proclaims her hopes for the Festival to pass "without incident". Mion attempts to drag Keiichi away from the conversation but is unsuccessful.
 
On the night of the Festival, Keiichi meets up with the other members of the club. Shion finds Keiichi and lures him away from the Festival to watch Tomitake and Takano break into the Saiguden.

Jirou Tomitake keeps watch outside but rushes in after Shion accidentally knocks over and breaks a statue of Oyashiro. Jirou determines that the statue had already been broken well beforehand and the group leaves. Jirou and Miyo leave and Shion playfully warns Keiichi to keep quiet about where they had been.
 
Keiichi meets up with Rika Furude, Rena Ryuuguu, and Mion Sonozaki. Rika asks if Keiichi saw her dance and he claims it was flawless, though the others are suspicious of this answer as Rika made a specific mistake during the dance that Keiichi was unaware of. Mion asks if Keiichi ran into Shion, Miyo, or Jirou, and Keiichi claims he did not.
 
Later, Keiichi runs into detective Ooishi Kuraudo. Ooishi also asks if Keiichi saw Miyo or Jirou, which he again denies. Ooishi reveals that he saw the four of them at the Saiguden and leaves. That night, Shion calls Keiichi and informs him that Miyo and Jirou stole one of the festival trucks and disappeared shortly after the festival. Shion is fearful that the pair were targeted by the curse of Oyashiro for breaking into the Saiguden and worries that she and Keiichi are similarly in danger.
 
The next day, June 20th, Keiichi learns that the town mayor, Kiichirou Kimiyoshi, has gone missing. Keiichi tries to clandestinely tell Rika about the his trip to the Saiguden, causing Rika to break her pretense and reveal her belief that this time loop is already doomed.
