The Great Hinamizawa Disaster was a catastrophic gas leak incident in the village of Hinamizawa. The village's entire populace was exposed to a mixture of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide and was completely wiped out overnight. The gas leak resulted in the permanent closing of visitation to the village.

It is revealed in Minagoroshi-hen that the Great Hinamizawa Disaster is the end result of Emergency Manual #34, a document outlining the official response to the outbreak of Hinamizawa Syndrome within Hinamizawa. The gas is known as H170, a particularly deadly strain of the Hinamizawa Syndrome virus which causes quick death.
